TRB’s Committee on Federal Funding of Transportation Improvements in BRAC Cases has issued an interim letter report to the Honorable Tim Johnson, Chairman, U.S. Senate Committee on Appropriations Subcommittee on Military Construction, Veterans Affairs, and Related Agencies. Based on a congressional request, the committee is exploring the appropriate sources of funding for transportation improvements serving military bases where significant and rapid increases in personnel will occur as a result of Defense Base Closure and Realignment Commission (BRAC) recommendations. The interim letter report provides background on the congressional request, communities affected by BRAC, existing sources of U.S. Department of Defense and U.S. Department of Transportation funding for transportation improvements, and the committee’s preliminary observations about issues it will address in its final report, due January 31, 2011.
