In the eight years since the report was released, there has been a significant strengthening of practice in governmental public health agencies and other settings. Substantial social, demographic, and technological changes in recent years, however, have made it necessary to reexamine governmental public health agencies' efforts to improve the public's health. Drawing on the activities and discussions initiated by the Institute of Medicine (IOM) Committee on Public Health, the current report addresses two critical public health issues that can greatly influence the opportunity for our public to be healthy as the United States enters a new century-(1) the relationship between public health agencies and managed care organizations, and (2) the role of the public health agency in the community-and their implications for the broader issues raised in The Future of Public Health. %0 Book %A National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine %E Bell, Crystal J. %E Johnson, Anne Frances %T The Use of Telehealth for Disability Evaluations in Medicine and Allied Health: Proceedings of a Workshop %@ 978-0-309-69150-5 %D 2022 %U https://nap.nationalacademies.org/catalog/26650/the-use-of-telehealth-for-disability-evaluations-in-medicine-and-allied-health %> https://nap.nationalacademies.org/catalog/26650/the-use-of-telehealth-for-disability-evaluations-in-medicine-and-allied-health %I The National Academies Press %C Washington, DC %G English %K Health and Medicine %P 98 %X Over the past few years the common use of telehealth technology has been rapidly expanding. While remote models of care have been successfully used in rural communities for decades, the adoption of telehealth rapidly expanded during the COVID-19 pandemic, narrowing some gaps in care access and equity while exacerbating health care inequities in other ways. At the request of the Social Security Administration, the National Academies hosted a workshop on March 9 and 10, 2022 to examine the use of telehealth for patient evaluation. The workshop explored the evolution of telehealth and commonly used terminology, the impact of inequities in digital access, privacy and cybersecurity concerns, its use in a variety of allied health and medical specialties for patient evaluation, and interstate licensure related to providing telehealth care. This publication provides a high-level summary of the presentations and discussions from the workshop. %0 Book %A Transportation Research Board %A National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine %E Holguín-Veras, José %E Amaya-Leal, Johanna %E Wojtowicz, Jeffrey %E Jaller, Miguel %E González-Calderón, Carlos %E Sánchez-Díaz, Iván %E Wang, Xiaokun %E Haake, Daniel G. %E Rhodes, Suzann S. %E Frazier, Robert J. %E Nick, Molly K. %E Dack, Joseph %E Casinelli, Luigi %E Browne, Michael %T Improving Freight System Performance in Metropolitan Areas: A Planning Guide %D 2015 %U https://nap.nationalacademies.org/catalog/22159/improving-freight-system-performance-in-metropolitan-areas-a-planning-guide %> https://nap.nationalacademies.org/catalog/22159/improving-freight-system-performance-in-metropolitan-areas-a-planning-guide %I The National Academies Press %C Washington, DC %G English %K Transportation and Infrastructure %P 200 %X TRB’s National Cooperative Freight Research Program (NCFRP) Report 33: Improving Freight System Performance in Metropolitan Areas: A Planning Guide outlines potential strategies and practical solutions for public and private stakeholders to improve freight movement system performance in diverse metropolitan areas. The report includes links to an Initiative Selector tool to aid in the selection of possible alternatives for various problems, and Freight Trip Generation (FTG) software that planners can use to identify main locations where freight is an issue. The individual decisions may not have a major effect but can have a cumulative major effect. Perspectives on Biodiversity reviews current understanding of the value of biodiversity and the methods that are useful in assessing that value in particular circumstances. It recommends and details a list of components—including diversity of species, genetic variability within and among species, distribution of species across the ecosystem, the aesthetic satisfaction derived from diversity, and the duty to preserve and protect biodiversity. The book also recommends that more information about the role of biodiversity in sustaining natural resources be gathered and summarized in ways useful to managers. Acknowledging that decisions about biodiversity are necessarily qualitative and change over time because of the nonmarket nature of so many of the values, the committee recommends periodic reviews of management decisions. %0 Book %A Transportation Research Board %A National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine %T Traveler Response to Transportation System Changes Handbook, Third Edition: Chapter 3, Park-and-Ride/Pool %D 2004 %U https://nap.nationalacademies.org/catalog/23432/traveler-response-to-transportation-system-changes-handbook-third-edition-chapter-3-park-and-ridepool %> https://nap.nationalacademies.org/catalog/23432/traveler-response-to-transportation-system-changes-handbook-third-edition-chapter-3-park-and-ridepool %I The National Academies Press %C Washington, DC %G English %K Transportation and Infrastructure %P 92 %X TRB’s Transit Cooperative Research Program (TCRP) Report 95: Chapter 3 – Park-and-Ride/Pool examines travel demand and related aspects of providing and supporting park-and-ride and park-and-pool facilities. The Traveler Response to Transportation System Changes Handbook consists of these Chapter 1 introductory materials and 15 stand-alone published topic area chapters. Dredging is one of the few options available for attempting to clean up contaminated sediments, but it can uncover and re-suspend buried contaminants, creating additional exposures for wildlife and people. At the request of Congress, EPA asked the National Research Council (NRC) to evaluate dredging as a cleanup technique. The book finds that, based on a review of available evidence, dredging's ability to decrease environmental and health risks is still an open question. Analysis of pre-dredging and post-dredging at about 20 sites found a wide range of outcomes in terms of surface sediment concentrations of contaminants: some sites showed increases, some no change, and some decreases in concentrations. Evaluating the potential long-term benefits of dredging will require that the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency step up monitoring activities before, during and after individual cleanups to determine whether it is working there and what combinations of techniques are most effective. %0 Book %T Postwar Commercial Properties and Section 106: Piloting the Methodology for Evaluating Historic Significance %D 2023 %U https://nap.nationalacademies.org/catalog/27254/postwar-commercial-properties-and-section-106-piloting-the-methodology-for-evaluating-historic-significance %> https://nap.nationalacademies.org/catalog/27254/postwar-commercial-properties-and-section-106-piloting-the-methodology-for-evaluating-historic-significance %I The National Academies Press %C Washington, DC %G English %K Transportation and Infrastructure %P 314 %X NCHRP Web-Only Document 367: Postwar Commercial Properties and Section 106: Piloting the Methodology for Evaluating Historic Significance, from TRB's National Cooperative Highway Research Program, provides a guide for practitioners to better understand how to evaluate post-World War II commercial properties for National Register of Historic Places eligibility for transportation projects in compliance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966. Seafood-caused health problems are not widespread, but consumers are at risk from seafood-borne microbes and toxins—with consequences that can range from mild enteritis to fatal illness. At a time when legislators and consumer groups are seeking a sound regulatory approach, Seafood Safety presents a comprehensive set of practical recommendations for ensuring the safety of the seafood supply. This volume presents the first-ever overview of the field, covering seafood consumption patterns, where and how seafood contamination occurs, and the effectiveness of regulation. A wealth of technical information is presented on the sources of contamination—microbes, natural toxins, and chemical pollutants—and their effects on human health.
