fLEASE RE-U1N PROMPTLY TO ROOM 326 NATIONAL ACADEMY OF SCIENCES • NATIONAL RESEARCH COUNCIL AVAILABLE RESEARCH FACILITIES FOR WAR USE Part II INDUSTRIAL LABORATORIES (Compiled from information received prior to November 1) COPY NUMBER 115 FOR THE CO~E OF WASHINGTON, D. C. November 1, 19'2 Digitized by Google

PREFACE A COllllIQ..ttee of the Nation.al academy of Sciences and the National R~search _Council ha~ conducted a survey to determine res~s.r.yh facil,i ties still available for war use. This survey was .. conduct~d in partial fulfillment of a request from the War Produc- tion Bos.rd contained in a letter signed by Dr. C.·K. Leith as consultan~ in the Materj,al~ Division and dated June 29, 1942. "Available Research Facilities for \iar Use. Industrial Labora- tories", · constitutes Part Two of a dire.ctory based on L"lforma.tion obtained in this canvass. Part One, a directory of facilities in universities and colleges, was sub1Qitted as of October 8, 1942 • . . These directories are necessarily incomplete. Information was received from other co1upanies too late for inclusion and will be retained at the Council offices, either for use in later directories or in connection with inquiries froro properly authorized war agencies. It should be noted particularly, that, .. in general, only the facilities reported as available are listed. A number of important laboratories are omitted or are given only briefly because they are fully engaged on war work. This information was obtained with the understa."lding that it was wa.'1.ted for war purposes and for use by responsible a.'ld properly authorized individuals directly concerned with research in the Armed Services or in the war agencies. The cooperation of the r:ar Production Board and of each recipient of a copy is requested in restricting the directories to this use. Part Two of the directory presents the data in brief form, arranged alphabetically by corupanies, with a subject guide Digitized by Google

ii to the research activities. There is, in some cases, additional information on file in the National Research Council which rIJay be consulted. The comLrl.ttee will suggest procedure, if desired, in the selection of laboratories for specific probleras. Dr. \ j . H. Kenerson, acting Executive Secretary of the National Research Coun- cil, will act for the comra:i.ttee, and may be reached at the Academy, 2101 Constitution Avenue, \:ashington, D. C.; telephone, Executive 8100. The purpose of the survey was to provide the \1ar Production Board and other Government agencies with iI,.mediate information on research facilities which are not at the present fully utilized. The use of these facilities rests with the various war agencies. November 25, 1942 F. T. Letchfield N. A. Shepard R. B. Jacobs, Secretary . . . Ray.1.1ond Stevens, Chairman Digitized by Google
