PREFACE During the last decade there has been increasing concern over the status of wild populations of primates, a concern expressed by conservationists and by many persons involved in medical research. In response, the Institute of Laboratory Animal Resources (ILAR) established the Committee on Conservation of Nonhuman Primates, which has sought information on the many facets of the problem and has developed certain strategies for the future. As one measure, a symposium on the distribution and abundance of neotropical primates was held in August 1972 at the Battelle Conference Center, in Seattle, Washington. There have been significant additions to our knowledge of the distribution and abundance of neotropical primates in the period since the symposium was held and the papers were prepared. It is gratifying that many such contributions have come from persons who attended or contributed directly to the symposium. We are confident that the material presented here is significant and provides essential documentation of progress in the study of platyrrhine biology. We are grateful to Drs. Thorington and Heltne for their editorial efforts and to the following for talented assistance at various stages in preparing the proceedings for publication: Dr. Miguel A. Schon, Linda LeResche, Robert Johnson, Johanne Humphrey, and the ILAR staffâespecially Dr. Nancy A. Muckenhirn and Lydia E. Koutze. We are especially thankful to Dr. Charles Southwick. present chairman of the ILAR Committee on Conservation of Nonhuman Primates, who has been most helpful in bringing this symposium to publication.
