Below is the uncorrected machine-read text of this chapter, intended to provide our own search engines and external engines with highly rich, chapter-representative searchable text of each book. Because it is UNCORRECTED material, please consider the following text as a useful but insufficient proxy for the authoritative book pages.

24 p e trochemical was tes in the pe tro leum refinery ; for examp l e , the petroleum coking proce s s can be quite e ffec t ive in de s troying many po tent ially hazardous petrochemical was te p roduc ts . Thi s can be po s s ib l e b o th in the de layed coking proc e s s as we l l as the fluid bed coking proces s . In a flexicoking-type proc e s s where the coke i s burned in a fluid bed regenerator , even more opportun i t i e s are pres ented for inc inerat ing pe trochemical was te s . Comb ining pe trochemical was te w i th coking me r i t s further s tudy and analys i s . 2. The pe trochemical indus try has adop ted and prac t i c e s energy cons e rving proce s s technologi e s . In general , a l l mate r i al was tes are recyc led and all proce s s heat is recove red and reused unt i l it become s imprac t i c al, ine ffic ient, or uneconomical to do s o . Greater than 9 5 pe rcent o f the ene rgy content o f the fee dstocks can be recove red i n the produc ts or can be recyc led w i thin the ene rgy us ed by a given p l ant . G iven the s e inputs, the comm i ttee reviewed recently pub l i shed information on inc inerat ion (3 -8) . There is a common thread among the s e re ference s : that i s , inc inerators for the disposal of hazardous organic was tes can be de s igned , cons truc ted , and operated s a t i s fac tor i ly , but such technique s are s t i l l an art rather than a s c i ence . There i s a need fo r further R&D on the s c i ence base underly ing the inc inerat ion p roce s s, e spe c i a l ly on the combus t ion i t s e l f , materials interac t i ons w i th the combus t ion environment, automated sys tems fo r proc e s s control , ident i fication and contro l of incomp l e te combus t ion , and o ther downs tream sys tems . The treatment and e ffective disposal o f hazardous was tes are important health , envi ronmental , and economic p rob lems fac ing the nation, and the comm i ttee recommends that the need for further research on the s c ience base unde rlying inc ineration techno logy be inve s t i gated by o ther o ffices in the Dep artment o f Ene rgy, the Envi ronmental Protect ion Agency , and the Department of De fens e . Smal ler comp anies w i th in the chemical indus try are in particul ar need of additional knowledge to as s i s t them in deal ing w i th the p rob lems o f hazardous was te s . REFERENCES 1.
