PREFACE During the twenty-seven years since the first edition of the "HAND- BOOK OF SCIENTIFIC AND TECHNICAL SOCIETIES AND INSTITUTIONS OF THE UNITED STATES AND CANADA" appeared, the increasing importance of science and technology has been reflected in the number of new scientific and technical organizations. Some of these groups concerned with specialties are small in member- ship, but the fact of their establishment is worthy of recording. In this edition, the sixth, entries are limited to membership group organizations and accordingly the word "Institutions" has been omitted from the title ; other categories, including trade associations with research activities which were previously included, have been elimi- nated. In view of the dissimilarity in content between the various edi- tions there is no significance to be drawn from the total number of entries; these are numbered only to facilitate use of the subject index. The first edition of this directory was compiled by the National Acad- emy of Sciences-National Research Council staff along the general lines of the "Handbook of Learned Societies and Institutions : Amer- ica", published by the Carnegie Institution of Washington in 1908, in accordance with an understanding reached in 1927 between the two organizations that a revision of the material in the 1908 volume was badly needed and that the Academy-Research Council's publication was not to be undertaken as a revision of the earlier work. The first edition of the handbook published by the Academy-Research Council differed from the Institution's handbook in that it included technical as well as scientific societies, omitted organizations in the humanities and those with academic affiliations, and listed a selected number of trade associations which were active in research. From 1927 through 1948, five editions of the handbook were issued. All information included in this, the sixth, edition has been furnished by officers of the organizations between June and December 1954. The National Research Council of Canada is responsible for the com- pilation of data for the section on Canadian associations in this volume as in previous editions. The staff of the library of the Academy- Research Council is responsible for the compilation of data for the United States section: Callie Hull, Librarian; Sarah Dees and Marion Blunder, Assistants. The services of Dorothy Bright were obtained for editorial assistance and particularly for the preparation of the index. Oerical work of Sarah Edna Dees, Deborah Duff, and Richard Pells is acknowledged. CALLIEHULL, Librarian National Academy of Sciences-- National Research Council.
