Statement of Task
An ad hoc committee will review previous studies as well as current processes used by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and equipment manufacturers to estimate non-ionizing millimeter wave radiation exposures resulting from millimeter-wave advanced imaging technology (AIT) system use in screening air travelers, and provide a report with findings and recommendations on:
- Whether exposures comply with applicable health and safety standards for public and occupational exposures to non-ionizing millimeter wave radiation, and
- Whether system design (e.g., safety interlocks), operating procedures, and maintenance procedures are appropriate to prevent over exposures of travelers and operators to non-ionizing radiation.
For the purposes of this study, the study committee will not question the adequacy of the official radiation exposure standards currently in place. Rather, the committee will review studies that have been conducted by the equipment manufacturers, DHS, and others. Furthermore, this study will not address legal, cultural or privacy implications of this technology.
