Statement of Task

The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine will convene an ad hoc Convergence Advisory Group to provide strategic advice to the Presidents of the National Academy of Sciences, National Academy of Engineering, and National Academy of Medicine on steps the National Academies can take to provide leadership and to spur convergence activities in the United States and internationally. In particular, the informal group of distinguished leaders will advise the Presidents on the following questions:

  • Is there a unique and valuable role for the National Academies in providing national and/or international leadership in the area of convergence?
  • If so, what are the highest priority activities for the National Academies?
  • How can the National Academies most effectively leverage and coordinate with major convergence activities being carried out by universities, foundations, the private sector, federal and state agencies, international organizations, and other organizations?

The results of the Convergence Advisory Group will inform development of future National Academies activities in this area. A workshop representing a next step in these activities will be convened. The specific focus, topics, and participants for the workshop will be refined through

Convergence-based research approaches are critical in solving many scientific challenges, which frequently draw on large teams of collaborators from multiple disciplines. The 2014 report Convergence: Facilitating Transdisciplinary Integration of Life Sciences, Physical Sciences, Engineering, and Beyond describes the term “convergence” as a multidisciplinary approach that melds divergent areas of expertise to form conclusions that are inaccessible otherwise. However, a convergence-based approach involves hybrid systems of people, buildings, and instruments, which pose complex structural and managerial challenges.

In October 23–24, 2018, the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine convened a workshop to explore efforts to promote cultures that support convergence-based approaches to research. The 2014 report served as a foundation for this workshop, allowing participants to further explore convergence as a valuable and adaptable approach to organizing research. This publication summarizes the presentations and discussions from the workshop.
