1 Introduction The Insight Event “Economic and Social Sustainability at Airports” was organized by the Airport Cooperative Research Program (ACRP) of the Transportation Research Board (TRB) as part of its series of Insight Events and under the aegis of ACRP Project 11-08/16-02. The impetus for this topic was the acknowledgment that airports understand and are actively working toward solutions focused on the environmental sphere of sustainability, but can benefit from enhanced support in understanding and overcoming challenges related to the economic and social sides of sustainability. A thorough literature review defined the state of the practice of both economic and social sustainability at airports and also identified notable thought leaders and practitioners in the industry. Several of these leaders and practitioners were then selected by ACRP to serve on a planning committee that provided strategic oversight and direction. Planning included discussions around whether and how to separate the examination of on economic and social sustainability, and the depth to which each aspect would be addressed. The agenda led off with two plenary sessions, including both a presentation and a discussion among panel members, which focused on social and then economic sustainability. The remainder of the event included two keynote addresses (one focused on the social aspect and one on economics), an open mic for participants to share successes and challenges, and interactive breakout sessions that allowed participants to delve deeper into more specific subtopics within social and economic sustainability, as well as the interaction between the two areas. The full agenda is provided in Appendix A. “Economic and Social Sustainability at Airports” took place on May 7–8, 2018, at the Keck Center of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine in Washington, D.C. More than 85 people—representing individuals from airports, airlines, academia, consulting, local and regional government, general sustainability professionals, and others—registered for the event. The full list of registrants is in Appendix B. Presentations from “Economic and Social Sustainability at Airports” are available on the ACRP Insight Event web page at at http://www.trb.org/ACRP/ACRP-Insight-Events.aspx. The literature review prepared for the event is available at http://oninepubs.trb.org/onlinepubs/acrip/docs/ACRPInsightEvent-LandUse-AnnotatedBibliography.pdf. Readers who are interested in more information can e-mail the ACRP senior program officer, Joseph D. Navarrete, at JNavarrette@nas.edu. ACRP is an industry-driven, applied research program that develops near-term, practical solutions to problems faced by airport operators. ACRP is managed by TRB, a part of the National Academies and is sponsored by the Federal Aviation Administration. ACRP Insight Events are forums that foster dialogue among professionals across sectors, institutions, and industries. ACRP Insight Events convene airport industry leaders and subject matter experts in various fields to encourage discussion and promote broader and

2 deeper insight on topics of significance to airport operators. These in-depth, face-to-face gatherings are intended to promote communication and collaboration, foster innovation, and help identify areas of future interest and research, especially for topics of emerging importance.
