Below is the uncorrected machine-read text of this chapter, intended to provide our own search engines and external engines with highly rich, chapter-representative searchable text of each book. Because it is UNCORRECTED material, please consider the following text as a useful but insufficient proxy for the authoritative book pages.

55   A P P E N D I X A Survey Instruments TRANSIT SAFETY RISK ASSESSMENT—TARGETED The Texas A&M Transportation Institute (TTI) is conducting a project called Transit Cooperative Research Program (TCRP) Synthesis J-07/Topic SA-51 Transit Safety Risk Assessment Methodologies. The focus of this project is to research current and new innovative state-of-the-practice methodologies for developing robust and consistent safety risk assessment methodologies for improving transit safety. The transit industry has traditionally relied on the Military Standard 882 system safety risk matrix approach that evaluates probability and severity. There are other methods that have been implemented in the transit industry and elsewhere, including exposure rate models and the European-based Common Safety Method. TCRP is interested in investigating what other methods are being utilized for risk assessment. This survey is an important part of the research project, will only take 5–10 minutes to complete and needs to be completed by March 21, 2021. You can stop mid-survey, and your work will be saved automatically, so you can return to finish the survey later. The information you provide will be synthesized with information collected from other transit professionals. Your answers will be confidential to the extent permitted or required by law. Your participation is greatly appreciated. If you have questions, concerns or complaints regarding this study, you may contact Chris Simek. You must be at least 18 to participate in the survey. You may be contacted by TTI to help clarify your answers or gather additional information. o Yes o No This survey invitation has been prepared for ______________ in ______________. Are you affiliated with this transit agency? o Yes o No Do you agree to participate in this research?

Risk management is the central element of the safety management system (SMS). Identifying, assessing, analyzing, mitigating, communicating, and documenting are all steps in an effective risk management program.

The TRB Transit Cooperative Research Program's TCRP Synthesis 157: Transit Safety Risk Assessment Methodologies is designed to help the transit industry better understand current and new innovative state-of-the-practice methodologies in safety risk assessment (SRA), which is an important part of the system.
