Statement of Task
A planning committee established by the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine will convene a virtual public workshop over 2–3 days to discuss the ability to make and repair equipment in current operational environments. This ability is increasingly vulnerable to disruptions to global supply chains and to attacks by adversaries. The workshop, Logistics and Manufacturing Under Attack, will include, but is not limited to, these example areas, as requested by the sponsor, to highlight common issues: (1) additive manufacturing of large structures; (2) electronic systems and subsystems; and (3) space logistics. Common issues to be focused on are failure prediction tools, supply issues, and applying sophisticated materials science and engineering at the point of need. The planning committee will also consider additional areas close to and in line with the three mentioned above when developing the workshop agenda and selecting and inviting speakers and discussants. This workshop takes a fresh look at the issues expected to dominate the logistics in the next 20 years to identify opportunities to overcome them at both small and large scales, and will use a mix of individual presentations, panels, and question-and-answer sessions to develop an understanding of the relevant issues. A proceedings of the presentations and discussions at the workshop will be prepared by a designated rapporteur in accordance with institutional guidelines.
