Statement of Task
The NASA Science Mission Directorate/Earth Science Division’s (SMD/ESD) Earth Venture is a Program element within the Earth System Science Pathfinder Program. At the request of NASA, the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine will convene an ad hoc study committee to examine the Earth Venture Instrument (EV-I) and Earth Venture Mission (EV-M) elements of Earth Ventures and report on lessons learned. The study includes a workshop to review, among other issues, the foundational principles and approaches underlying the program.
The committee will consider:
- Measures of success for EV-I and EV-M endeavors;
- The experiences of Principal Investigators, Project Managers, and Institutions in the proposing, implementation, and operation of EV investigations;
- EV foundational principles, including the means by which they are implemented and enforced, as well as the implications of non-conformity;
- Potential trades among cadence, cost (including cost caps), and risk in implementing future EV missions;
- An assessment of the implications of the changing launch vehicle and hosted payload markets for future EV missions; and
- Lessons-learned for consideration in future implementations of EV-I and EV-M program elements.
