Strategic Planning In fall 2021, the forum began a strategic planning effort that will continue to be a priority in 2022. The planning exercise is an opportunity for the forum members to reflect on the progress the group has made over the past 5 years, to consider what the field of regenerative medicine needs to advance, and to decide on the strategic direction for the group over the next 3–5 years. As a result of that work, the forum may modify the existing working group structure and/or develop new working groups or areas of interest. The strategic planning exercise consists of several phases, each with a distinct focus. Successive phases of the process align with upcoming forum meetings in 2022. At the forum meeting in November 2021, the group assessed the strengths and weaknesses of the forum and the needs of the field of regenerative medicine as part of the Reflection Phase. During the Direction Phase planned for spring 2022, the forum will define the group’s vision and guiding principles and refine high- level strategic objectives. Through the Adoption Phase in summer 2022, members will affirm the group’s purpose, establish priorities, and update the working group structure. Finally, in the Implementation Phase during fall 2022, the forum will set quarterly goals and implement accountability mechanisms. 2 | Forum on Regenerative Medicine

The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine's Forum on Regenerative Medicine (the forum) provides a convening mechanism for interested parties from academia, industry, government, patient and provider organizations, regulatory bodies, foundations, societies, associations, and others. The forum identifies existing and potential barriers to scientific and therapeutic advances; discusses opportunities to assist in facilitating more effective partnerships among key stakeholders; examines the impact that current policies have on the discovery, development, and translation of regenerative medicine therapies; considers the unique challenges of identifying, validating, and bringing regenerative medicine applications to market; and explores the ethical, legal, and social issues posed by advances in regenerative medicine.

During 2021, the forum members continued to focus on two broad areas through their two working groups: Regenerative Engineering and Gene Therapy and Systems Thinking. The members and staff also continued to explore challenges and discuss possible solutions in a number of other areas relevant to the development of regenerative medicines, including communication, workforce development, cost of and access to therapies, and regulatory and legislative affairs. This publication describes the activities of the forum during 2021.
