Below is the uncorrected machine-read text of this chapter, intended to provide our own search engines and external engines with highly rich, chapter-representative searchable text of each book. Because it is UNCORRECTED material, please consider the following text as a useful but insufficient proxy for the authoritative book pages.

127 APPENDIX C: Case Study Interview Script Introduction and Introductory Questions: Thank you for completing the online survey and for volunteering to participate in a follow-up interview regarding WZITs. The follow-up interviews are intended to gather detailed information about intrusion alert technologies that your state has implemented. The information will be used to develop focused case studies of specific WZITs. Have you reviewed the explanation of the research that was provided with the survey and in the email regarding the follow-up interview? If so, do you have any questions or concerns? If you do have any questions, please let me know. WZIT Use and Implementation Questions: We have some questions about your personal experience using WZIT and the technologies that you have experienced. Q1. Please describe your role and experience using WZITs on roadway construction projects. Q2. In your survey response you mentioned that your state is currently implementing WZIT. (MENTION THE TECHNOLOGIES FROM THE LIST THAT WE WANT THEM TO PROVIDE INFORMATION ON.) We would like to obtain more details about each of these technologies and your state’s experiences with their implementation on projects. (ASK QUESTIONS ABOUT THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION FOR EACH TECHNOLOGY MENTIONED ABOVE.) a. About the technology: o Technology description and characteristics o Technology applications and usage details o Implementation needs and limitations o Types of projects or work operations on which the technology is particularly useful o Environmental conditions needed for its use

128 o An Internet website where we can find further information about the technology, if available b. About the construction project(s) or work operation(s) on which the technology has been implemented successfully: o The details of the project or work operation o What made you decide to use this technology on this project o How the technology was used on the project o Impacts as a result of using the technology o Lessons learned from using the technology on the project Q3: Is there any other project and/or technology information that you could share with us that we can include in our case study (e.g., project and/or technology photos, project documentation, figures/tables, etc.)? Q4: Do you have any other suggestions or recommendations regarding the use of WZITs on roadway construction projects? Q5: We will be developing a descriptive case study(ies) based on the information that you have provided. a. Is it OK that we use the information that you provided in our case study? Your name and personal information will not be included. b. If we have additional questions as we develop the case study, may we contact you again? Thank you for participating in this follow-up interview/discussion. We appreciate your assistance with our study.

Work zone intrusion technologies are available that provide an opportunity to prevent and mitigate vehicle intrusions into roadway work zones.

The TRB National Cooperative Highway Research Program's NCHRP Web-Only Document 322: Alternative Technologies for Mitigating the Risk of Injuries and Deaths in Work Zones: Conduct of Research provides a comprehensive synthesis and evaluation of technologies that prevent and/or mitigate intrusions into work zones.

The document is supplemental to NCHRP Research Report 1003: Guide to Alternative Technologiesfor Preventing and Mitigating Vehicle Intrusions into Highway Work Zones.
