Letter to the Sponsor

Dear Dr. Davis:

The Standing Committee for the Review of the Dietary Reference Intake (DRI) Framework (standing committee) was asked by its sponsors to review the DRI framework, structure, and process relevant to future DRI reviews. I am writing in response to questions posed in open sessions, held February 24 and April 8, 2022, with the standing committee by the Federal DRI Joint U.S.–Canadian Working Group (working group) and the Committee to Review DRIs for Energy (DRI committee) related to determining a definition for the appropriate population to be considered for dietary intake recommendations for the United States and Canada and related questions. The standing committee has discussed six questions posed by the working group and six questions posed by the DRI committee. In this letter report we provide a high-level summary of our consensus opinion on these questions. The committee’s intent was to provide overarching responses that could apply across future DRI reviews as well as the current review. Differences in the application of the standing

committee’s advice to future DRI studies suggests this is the most appropriate approach to responding to the questions posed.

Thank you on behalf of the standing committee,

John W. Erdman, Jr.

Since 1997, the United States and Canada have adopted harmonized Dietary Reference Intakes (DRIs), a set of nutrient intake reference values for use in planning and assessing diets for individuals and groups in both countries. In 2022 the U.S. Department of Agriculture asked the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine to convene a Standing Committee to review the DRI framework, including the structure and process that will guide future DRI reviews, and respond to questions posed by the U.S. and Canadian Federal DRI working group. Dietary recommendations have traditionally been designed for populations that were referred to as healthy or apparently healthy. The imprecise terminology and definition of these terms may exclude the increasing number of American and Canadian citizens with chronic disease. In its first letter report, the Standing Committee offers its advice on how to define the population to be considered for DRI recommendations for the United States and Canada.
