Statement of Task

A planning committee of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine will organize and conduct a 1-day public workshop to explore the innovation pipeline for new technologies addressing traumatic brain injury (TBI) prevention, treatment, and management. Invited presentations and discussions may be designed to:

  • Discuss how major unmet needs in TBI prevention, treatment, and management may be addressable through technological innovation, with consideration to patient, family, and provider priorities.
  • Consider how ongoing scientific and technical advances are leading to promising innovation opportunities for some aspects of TBI prevention, treatment, and management, while others remain underdeveloped.
  • Consider how implementation needs should be incorporated into the research and development process.
  • Identify critical knowledge gaps where technology is needed to transform care, particularly with regard to assessing whether, when, and how prevention, treatment, and management approaches improve outcomes over time, and for which patients.

The planning committee will organize the workshop, develop the agenda, select and invite speakers and discussants, and moderate or identify moderators for the discussions. A proceedings of the presentations and discussions at the workshop will be prepared by a designated rapporteur in accordance with institutional guidelines.

Despite traumatic brain injury (TBI) being a leading cause of morbidity and mortality in the U.S., substantial unmet needs persist in TBI prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and recovery. The National Academies Forum on Traumatic Brain Injury hosted a public workshop in April 2024 to explore examples of recent research, development, and implementation of TBI diagnostic biomarkers, injury prevention technologies, clinical decision tools, and treatment approaches. Discussions explored examples of needs, opportunities, and challenges influencing innovation.
