INTRODUCTION The 1961Ì -1965 New York World' s Fair, led t o a unique opportunity t o per- form s t r u c t u r a l t e s t s t o destruction of certain buildings t h a t were scheduled f o r demolition. Results of the te s t s on one of these buildings, a waffle slab structure, are reported i n a separate paper. Ì"''Ì A l t h o u ^ time available t o plan and carry out the s t r u c t u r a l t e s t s was l i m i t e d , every e f f o r t was made t o adapt laboratory techniques t o the f i e l d . This was done so that the best possilbe record of the behavior of the t e s t structure could be obtained. OBJECT AND SCOPE This paper describes experimental techniques and special equipment used i n tests t o destruction of a waffle-slab structure at the s i t e of the 1964-65 New York World's Fair. These d e t a i l s are described not only f o r the purpose of docvmienting the t e s t s , but also t o record information useful t o futTire investigators engaged i n f i e l d t e s t i n g of structures. Laboratory methods of instrumentation were used i n the f i e l d . Loading systems known t o be r e l i a b l e i n the laboratory were also modified f o r use on the t e s t structure. More detailed descriptions of the use of similar techniques i n the PCA Structural Laboratory are given else- Where.(2.3) This paper reports detailed information on preparation of the t e s t structure, design and assembly of special equipment, c a l i b r a t i o n of instruments, and methods and controls used i n the tests. 2-2
