Below is the uncorrected machine-read text of this chapter, intended to provide our own search engines and external engines with highly rich, chapter-representative searchable text of each book. Because it is UNCORRECTED material, please consider the following text as a useful but insufficient proxy for the authoritative book pages.

TEST PROCEDURES SUPPORT EQUIBIENT AND FACILITIES At the time the tests were carried out, the New York World's Fair had been closed f o r about s i x months. Many exhi b i t s were t o r n down and others were i n various stages of demolition. Usual services such as telephones and e l e c t r i c a l power were no longer available at the s i t e . Thus i n preparing f o r the t e s t s , i t was necessary t o make special eurragements t o obtain these f a c i l i t i e s . E l e c t r i c a l power was brought t o the t e s t b u i l d i n g from a substation located about 1000 f t from the struct\are. Power was 3-phase 220V with 100 amp capacity. From the main block of outlets located inside the bu i l d i n g , extension cords were used t o d i s t r i b u t e the e l e c t r i c a l power used to operate the hydraulic pumps, the photographer's l i g h t i n g system, a general l i g h t i n g system, and certain recording instruments. Since most of the t e s t i n g was done during hours of darkness, 275-watt portable lamps with r e f l e c t o r shields were used i n the general l i g h t i n g system t o illuminate t e s t areas w i t h i n and outside of the building. The photographic l i g h t i n g system was composed of four 1000-watt photo- flood l i g h t s with r e f l e c t o r s . These were used f o r high i n t e n s i t y i l l u - mination of the t e s t area. Several 150-watt flood lamps were concen- tr a t e d i n areas where personnel operated equipment and recorded data. Instruments f o r recording strains and slab deflections were located on a mezzanine inside the building. V/hile the tests were i n progress, chairs, benches, and tables were available f o r use by personnel i n operating equip- ment and recording data. The hydraulic pumps and instrumentation f o r mea- suring load were located on the roof. Communication between personnel on the roof and on the mezzanine was maintained by radio receiver-transmitters. 2-3
