ABOUT THE NATIONAL ACADEMIES Chartered by Congress in 1863, the National Academy of Sciences, the National Academy of Engineering, and the National Academy of Medicine work together as the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine. The Health and Medicine Division (HMD) of the National Academies empowers those in government, the private sector, and academia to make informed, evidence-based policy decisions impacting the health of all Americans. HMD facilitates discussion, discovery, and interdisciplinary thinking, aided by volunteer subject- matter experts, individuals with lived experience, and others who offer critical insights into some of the most complex health and medical issues facing the nation and the world.
