Introduction Introduction to the AASHTO Draft Release This document presents a draft copy of a work still in progress to create a Project Bibliography in support of NCHRP Project 8- 32 (1), Innovative Practices in Multimodlal Planning. By direct instruction of the Project Panel, a limited number of draft copies have been prepared for circulation to the Standing Committee on Planning of the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Of finials, at their meeting in October, 1 995. It should be noted at the outset that the bibliography was not created to serve as a comprehensive listing of documents concerning transportation planning. Rather the seven sections of the bibliography were each created to support a specific research task or theme in the NCHRP 8-32 (1) project. This document was originally submitted to the NCHRP and the Project Panel to serve as part ofthe project's Interim Report. The work has been performed by a team lead by TransManagement Inc., of Washington, D.C., where Ms. Sarah Campbell serves as Principal in Charge. The Project Bibliography was created under the direction of Matthew A. Coogan, an independent transportation consultant who serves as the project's Principal Investigator for the TransManagement Team. Professor Michael Meyer also serves as a member ofthe project team. . The document contains the first results of an extensive research effort to locate the innovative multimodal planning activities underway in the last four years around the country. The Project Bibliography takes the form of seven separate annotated bibliographies created in support of the policy concerns specifically emphasized by the project Panel in the creation of the original scope of work projects. As such, it represents the first of what could be many applications of the NCHRP 8-32 Interactive Database. The Project Database was created in response to a major concern expressed by the members ofthe Project Panel that an exhaustive exploration be undertaken to locate original multimodal planning efforts, from whatever source, for whatever purpose. The Project Database is the result of assembly of bibliographic references from the following sources: The Transportation Research Information Service, (TRIS) created by the Transportation Research Board, and released through two mechanisms; the Dialog Information Services, and the Silver Platter "Transport" CD-ROM. This primary data source contains over 20,000 records, including a vast source of published information through November of 1 994. . Papers, panels and presentations accepted for the 74th Annual Meeting of the TRB, held in Washington, D.C. in JaIluar~v of 1 995 · Papers and abstracts submitted to a series of TRB Conferences since November of 1 994, including the December 1 994 Conference on Best Practices in Intermodal Planning, (New Orleans LA), the April 1 995 Conference on Planning Applications (Seattle, WA), and the

Proiect Bibliouraphy- NCHRP 8-32 (1) May 1995 Conference on Metropolitan Transportation Planning, (Williamsburg, VA) Documents collected by the project team from Federal, state, regional sources over the last two years, including examples state Management Systems and Federally-sponsored research in the area of multimodal and intermodal planning. Currently the Project Database contains references (in varying level of detail) to more than 1,000 records concerning subjects associated with multimodal and intermodal transportation planning. From this larger base, the seven subject specific bibliographies utilize more than 700 of these project references. The Project Database can be seen as both a temporary update of TRIS, and as the result of a major effort to produce a smaller "browsing library" related to the very focused subareas of multimodal and intermodal planning. Commments on the Draft Project Bibliography may be directed either to Mr. Ronald McCready, Senior Program Officer at NCHRP, at 202 334 3034, or to TransManagement Inc., at 202 547 2717.
