EXPLORING A CULTURE OF FAIRNESS, RESPECT, AND ANTI-RACISM IN HEALTH PROFESSIONS EDUCATION

INTRODUCTION

To explore a culture of fairness, respect and anti-racism in health professions education, a National Academies planning committee convened a diverse group of educators, students, administrators, and health professionals to explore diversity, equity, inclusion (DEI) and anti-racism across the spectrum of health professions education. Participants shared ideas and educational materials using convening mechanisms that maximize sharing across professions, sectors, and educational level, and provide the spark for initiating DEI and anti-racism curricula and structures.

Each session explored different forms of institutional structures as potential mechanisms for influencing or eliminating discriminatory practices within education of health professionals. The first session explored accreditation as a mechanism for change. The second session probed the importance of language for sparking action on improving DEI and eliminating racism. The third session sought to understand how metrics and funding organizations are, or could be, used in measuring and promoting anti-racism structures of institutions. All three workshop sessions are summarized in this interactive educational product that you are free to use and share with others. The planning committee realizes this is just an initial stage of addressing anti-racism within diversity, equity, and inclusion, so we encourage you to review and adapt this product to the needs of your own organization or program. Please feel free to share your adaptations with us at pcuff@nas.edu.
