For the 1989­ 1990 cohort of students assessed in 1994, the NCES study found, in general, that 25 percent of community college students indicated in their responses that they were working toward bachelor's degrees, and 39 percent of these students had transferred directly to four-year institutions by 1994. Of community college students identified as prospective transfers, those who were enrolled full time in their first year of community college were about twice as likely to transfer to four-year institutions within five years.
