Following his clinical training in 1965, he was an investigator at the National Institutes of Health until 1970. In 1970, he was appointed to the faculty at the Harvard Medical School, where he was named professor of pediatrics in 1979 and chief of the Division of Cell Biology, Pulmonary Medicine, and director of the Cystic Fibrosis Program at Children's Hospital Medical Center in Boston.
