... Early on, he developed an interest in science and technology, especially astronomy, and while still in grammar school, he built a telescope to "map the Moon." At age 13, young Arthur discovered science fiction and became a voracious reader of stories of space exploration and life on other planets in the very popular "pulp" magazines. Thus the interests that would shape his life took hold in his mind when he was still very young.

This was an audacious idea, and I remember wondering if I would be alive when Clarke's proposal was implemented.
