Besides being an excellent student, he played on both the basketball and baseball teams and was a member of Phi Lambda Upsilon, Alpha Chi Sigma, Pi Delta Epsilon, Sigma Xi, and Tau Beta Pi. During World War II, he interrupted his education to work at the Los Alamos Laboratory for the Manhattan Project from 1944 to 1945.
