His research interests include the practice, teaching, and study of health survey research methods, with particular emphasis on the joint roles of costs and statistical efficacy in survey design, sampling of elusive populations, and survey nonresponse.  He has served as sampling statistician or adviser on many of the major national surveys in the United States and has designed samples for several international health surveys, including ones in Egypt, Honduras, Indonesia, Jordan, Russia, and Somalia. He is a fellow of the American Statistical Association.
