... According to Xu, more than 2 million animals die in Xinjiang each year, which is equal to the number of commodity animals purchased in that region during the same period. Weight loss is an even more serious problem: based on a conversion between sheep units and kilograms of body weight, Xu calculates that annual weight loss accounts for four times the sheep lost by death and more than can be made up by the net annual increase in the number of animals.
