After his family relocated to the United States from China, he undertook his engineering education at the Stevens Institute of Technology, where he graduated as valedictorian and received a master's degree in mechanical engineering in 1942. He joined the staff of the MIT Radiation Laboratory and continued his education, receiving a PhD in mathematics in 1946.
