... Because of radioactive decay and natural weathering, many of the radionuclides in the initial fallout material are no longer present. Resettlement decisions must include consideration of which radionucTides are present and the extent to which current and future radionuclide inventories will contribute to radiation doses that the Rongelap people might receive from external and internal sources.

This information is then coupled with models of radionuclide metabolism and dosimetry to calculate the internal deposition and retention of these radionuclides and the resulting internal radiation dose.
