... Born April 19, 1928, John Horlock grew up in Winchmore Hill, north London, with his older sister Beryl and their parents, Harold Edgar and Olive Margaret Horlock. His father ran an undertaking firm, Blake and Horlock, in Edmonton.

... In 1967 he returned to Cambridge where he held a chair and became deputy head of the Department of Engineering, which had nearly 1,000 students and a teaching staff of about 100. In addition, he chaired the Mechanical Engineering Committee of the Science Research Council, the UK agency that from 1965 to 1981 was in charge of publicly funded scientific research ­ ctivities.
