At the same time, there are features of the funding environment that work against realizing the full promise of the field: Finding: National Science Foundation award sizes for individual investigators in biological physics have reached dangerously low levels, both in contrast to the National Institutes of Health and in absolute terms. Finding: Support for the physics of living systems is scattered widely across the National Institutes of Health, making it difficult for investigators to find their way and obscuring the coherence of the field.

These observations lead to the committee's recommendations about financial support for the field (Chapter 9) , starting with an overarching response to the concerns outlined above: General Recommendation: Funding agencies, including the National Insti tutes of Health, the National Science Foundation, the Department of Energy, and the Department of Defense, as well as private foundations, should de velop and expand programs that match the breadth of biological physics as a coherent field.
