3 Work Zone Safety and Intrusions The deterioration of highway infrastructure, increase in traffic volumes, and need for new transportation routes necessitates constant attention and care to either maintain existing or construct new roadway networks and infrastructure. One of the unfortunate consequences of highway work zones are the dangerous interactions between passing vehicles and the work zone and its occupants, including human workers, construction equipment, and other temporary traffic control infrastructure.
