Telehealth involves a wide variety of modalities and practices and can bring welcome flexibility for patients, clinicians, and health care organizations. It also raises a range of questions with regard to health care equity and access; digital privacy and security; and how telehealth fits into frameworks for health care policy, regulation, and reimbursement.

When telehealth was first introduced, regulatory and technological limitations impeded widespread adoption, but health care reforms and legislation, new technologies, and the COVID-19 pandemic have increased its use across many areas of health care. This prompted SSA to explore how telehealth is being used by the medical and allied health communities along with potential challenges claimants may face with regard to issues such as access, privacy, and legal concerns.
