2 1.1 Background Crash data show that more than 18,000 traffic fatalities per year result from roadway departures, and over 7,000 of those roadway departure crashes involved collisions with roadside fixed objects. Roadway departure crashes account for nearly half of fatalities and involve vehicles leaving the road unintentionally for any of several reasons, including driver fatigue, driver inattention, or avoiding a collision on the roadway.
