Quality Assurance and Reliability Division Modeling of the Space Environment and Spacecraft Interactions H B Garrett 44 40 96 01 The dnve toward larger, more complex, and higher-power space systems has mcreased both the sensitivity of such systems to the space environment and their overall cost The desire to have such missions last for 20 to 30 years to recoup costs means that future systems must be designed with a high level of rehabihty In order to achieve this high level of rehabihty, detailed models of the environment and of specific interactions such as spacecraft charging, single-event upsets, etc are required to understand and quantify the effects. Currendy, few models exist that are capable of assessing exisung reliabihtydesign requirements.
