The National Academy of Sciences and its associated entities the National Academy of Engineering, the Institute of Medicine, and the National Research Council are among the world's leading scientific organizations. In 1863, under a charter granted by President Abraham Lincoln, 50 American scientists joined together to establish an American academy of sciences.
