She has been chair of the baccalaureate nursing program at Syracuse University and held many positions at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, including dean of the school of nursing, professor of both nursing and education, and associate vice president for academic affairs. Following this, she became the fourth administrator of the Health Care Financing Administration and held that position from 1981 to 1985.
