He is a former Fellow in Marine Policy and a Policy Associate at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. Currently, he also serves as Associate Director of the Great Lakes and Mid-Atlantic Hazardous Substance Research Center, member of the Environmental Engineering Committee of U.S.

Dr. Paulson served as a member of the National Research Council's Board on Radioactive Waste Management from 1989 to 1996 and has served on several other National Research Council committees dealing with hazardous and radioactive waste.
