Williams was executive director of Information Resources and Strategic Planning at the Merck Research Laboratories. During her almost 24 years at Merck, she made contributions as a laboratory scientist in the application of biophysical techniques to drug design; led strategic planning for R&D; led the molecular modeling department in the development of improved approaches to computational chemistry and chemical data mining; and provided planning and coordination of information and computer resources including the publication of the Merck Index.
