Research Roadmap on Safety Issues 16 3. Provide a preliminary prioritized list of topics that could be distributed to the airport industry for comments prior to the drafting of the final list. 4. Roadmap Development and Finalization With the foundational research for the roadmap completed in Phase I, three steps remained to complete the project; 1) solicit comments from industry stakeholders on the list of airport safety topics, 2) refine the topics list and finalize the prioritization, and 3) create the visual user-friendly and interactive tool that would display the roadmap on the ACRP IdeaHub website. The Project Oversight Panel gave the approval to proceed during the interim meeting, and the research team proceeded with the completion of these final steps toward the creation of the Research Roadmap on Airport Safety Issues. 4.1 Industry Stakeholder Feedback The preliminary list of safety topics was initially refined by the research team prior to submitting it out for industry comments. During the refinement process, the team expanded upon the proposed objectives for each safety topic, and added details to the background information for each topic so that those reviewing the list would get the full sense of what the research team was proposing and to get a feel for the type of information that might be included in a full problem statement. The finalized draft list of safety topics was then distributed to a selected number of industry stakeholders that included 30 airports, two major airlines, two airline pilot associations, and an aircraft manufacturer. Ultimately, seven organizations provided feedback and comments on the list: ï· Air Line Pilots Association, International (ALPA) â Pilot Union ï· Chennault International Airport (CWF) â General Aviation, Louisiana ï· Dallas â Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) â Large Hub, Texas ï· Denver International Airport (DEN) â Large Hub, Colorado ï· Gulfstream Aerospace â Aircraft Manufacturer ï· Norfolk International Airport (ORF) â Small Hub, Virginia ï· San Francisco International Airport (SFO) â Large Hub, California The responses from these organizations did not provide additional safety topics for inclusion in the list; however, their feedback was generally very positive. The input received included their views on the validity of the research ideas, their thoughts on the priority of each idea, and additional content to consider in describing the objectives and background of each research topic. In addition to this industry feedback, the 40 research ideas proposed in the preliminary list were posted in the ACRP IdeaHub in order to solicit additional input via votes and comments on each topic. Over a three-week period, 31 of the topics received comments and a total of 51 votes were received for research prioritization. Two topics received four votes, five topics received three votes, and four proposals received two votes. In the final roadmap, two topics both addressing Terminal Safety were merged into a single topic. Each had received three IdeaHub votes; thus the votes were added together for the revised topic and shown in the roadmap final topics list as received six votes.
