1 The goal of this guidebook is to support the green stormwater infrastructure (GSI) decision- making process through a step-by-step evaluation of the feasibility of integrating GSI into air- port stormwater management programs. Implementation of GSI strategies at airports has been slow due to a combination of barriers to adaptation such as safety limitations, the potential to attract wildlife, and the common mis- conception that green infrastructure increases operation and maintenance (O&M) costs. Despite the availability of guidance on green infrastructure and its implementation in general, there is limited guidance and lessons learned specific to the aviation sector. Ideally, this guidebook should be used in combination with ACRP Research Report 174: Green Stormwater Infrastructure, Volume 1: Primer. For information on the basics of stormwater management and GSI, please refer to the primer. Approach Development of this guidebook was shaped by information on a variety of GSI-related issues and strategies shared by participating airports during the ACRP study. This guidebook will pro- vide a basic process that airport managers of any airport size or type can follow to: 1. Assess their stormwater management needs including whether GSI may be applicable and 2. Learn about and select appropriate GSI strategies. In providing information and a framework for assessing and selecting GSI strategies, the guidebook will help airport managers progress toward the point of initiating the design process for their GSI project. How to Use This Guidebook Step 1: Understanding Green Stormwater Infrastructure: Airport staff can use this section to understand the advantages of and misconceptions about the use of GSI. Step 2: Gathering Information Needed to Assess and Implement Green Stormwater Infra- structure: Before assessing the feasibility of implementing GSI, airport staff can use this section to determine what types of technical, financial, and other information should be gathered to complete a holistic evaluation of how GSI might be incorporated into their stormwater manage- ment system. Step 3: Screening GSI Best Management Practices: Airport staff can use this section to make an initial identification of potential GSI strategies and best management practices (BMPs) that may be suitable for stormwater management in the areas of concern at their facilities. 2 Green Stormwater Infrastructure Step 4: Understanding GSI Best Management Practices: In this section, airport staff can read about potentially suitable GSI BMPs to gain understanding of their technical, maintenance, cost, and other characteristics. Step 5: Evaluating GSI Feasibility for Airports: After compiling and reviewing facility- and region-specific information, and reading the sections on GSI BMPs, airport managers will be guided through a careful evaluation of the potentially applicable GSI BMPs.
