80 A P P E N D I X A Survey Questionnaire Dear AASHTO Committee on Construction Members: The Transportation Research Board (TRB) is preparing a synthesis on Emerging Technologies in Construction Delivery. This is being done for the National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP), under the sponsorship of the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO), in cooperation with the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA). The scope of this research is to investigate the following five specific emerging technologies for transportation construction delivery: • Visualization and modeling technologies for constructability, communication, and documentation during construction; • Interconnected technologies for construction vehicles, equipment, and handheld tools at construction project sites; • Safety technologies used during construction for DOT and contractor workers and the traveling public; • Instrumentation during construction to evaluate short-term or locked-in boundary conditions or member forces in specialty projects; and • Uses of unmanned aircraft systems for construction monitoring, documentation, survey and inventory. The objectives of this questionnaire are to (1) identify emerging technologies currently implemented and used by DOTs to deliver construction projects, (2) document strengths and weaknesses of emerging technologies, (3) identify opportunities to improve construction delivery with the use of technologies, (4) identify barriers that DOTs have experienced in applying emerging technologies to construction delivery and document how and why DOTs are using specific emerging technologies, and (5) report on how DOTs apply emerging technologies to highway construction projects. Your expertise and experience are critical to the success of this important project. Your individual privacy will be maintained in all published and written data resulting from this study. We thank you in advance for your time and thoughtful consideration. The final report of this project will be provided to your agency. If you are not the appropriate person at the DOT to complete this questionnaire, please forward it to the correct person.

The uses and levels of maturity of five advanced technology areas visualization and modeling, interconnected technologies, safety technologies, instrumentation and sensors, and unmanned aircraft systems in transportation highway construction projects are documented in TRB’s National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP) Synthesis 534: Emerging Technologies for Construction Delivery. The synthesis also investigates the implementation barriers and success factors for these technology areas and discusses the lessons learned as noted by state DOTs in their effort to study, test, and implement a new construction technology.

As the highway construction industry infuses more technologies into the process of project delivery, state DOTs have an opportunity to realize improved project performance regarding cost, schedule, and quality.

The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) Every Day Counts (EDC) initiatives promote the use of various advanced and emerging technologies (e.g., automated machine guidance, unmanned aircraft systems, building information modeling, handheld instruments and devices, and work zone intrusion detection systems).
