1 INTRODUCTION Published in 2012, NCHRP Report 600: Human Factors Guidelines for Road Systems (HFG), Second Edition, was the first complete holistic release of the HFG. The HFG is a relatively new roadway design resource that provides data and insights from the scientific literature on the needs, capabilities, and limitations of road users, including perception and effects of visual demands, cognition and its influence on expectations for driving behavior, and individual differences such as age and other factors. The HFG assists practitioners in safety, operations, and design in developing a greater understanding of road usersâ capabilities and limitations and how these issues could be incorporated into day-to-day decision-making. NCHRP Web-Only Document 316, Volume 1, is an addendum to the HFG Second Edition. It expands upon the Second Edition with three new guideline chapters: Pedestrians, Bicyclists, and Roundabouts. In addition, it provides updated information to three guideline chapters that are included in the Second Edition HFG: Chapter 1: Why Have Human Factors Guidelines for Road Systems?, Chapter 5: Sight Distance, and Chapter 10: Non-Signalized Intersections. Finally, three new tutorials that discuss Joint Use of the Highway Safety Manual (HSM) and the Human Factors Guidelines for Road Systems (HFG), Using the HFG to Support a Road Safety Audit (RSA), and Summary of HFG Topics are included in this addendum to the HFG. Organization of This Document in Relation to the HFG Second Edition The HFG Second Edition is organized in a way that provides users with easy access to relevant information, with chapters organized into five parts. Because the chapters in the Second Edition are numbered sequentially, there is no convenient way to add new content within the appropriate part without renumbering all of the chapters in the HFG. Therefore, the new chapters have been numbered to follow the last chapter of the Second Edition even though that would not be the location of these chapters if an entirely new edition were being published. It is expected that the chapter numbering and pagination scheme of future editions of the HFG will be revised to facilitate the addition of new content while providing consistency in pagination throughout the HFG. The updated chapters of this document are designed to allow the user to insert them into the appropriate places within a PDF file of the Second Edition if desired. To ensure consistency with the HFG Second Edition, pagination includes only the chapter and page numbers and not the Part designator. The References cover only the new material in this update and will be incorporated into Chapter 23 in future editions.
