Part I
Institutional History
The following chapters describe the founding of the Institute of Medicine (IOM) in 1970, its journey toward establishment as a trusted and influential advisor on health and medicine, and institutional steps toward becoming the National Academy of Medicine (NAM) in 2015. This part also includes descriptions of the roles of IOM/NAM presidents, members, and staff leaders, as well as the NAM’s response to national and global challenges in its first years as an Academy alongside the National Academy of Sciences and the National Academy of Engineering.
