A MESSAGE FROM THE CHIEF DIVERSITY AND INCLUSION OFFICER
We are pleased to share the first Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Action Plan of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (the National Academies). The Office of Diversity and Inclusion (ODI) released its first Annual Report in 2022, which documents the institution’s efforts to build capacity to advance DEI, including the establishment of the inaugural ODI. Now that we have the infrastructure to move this work forward, we are laying out this comprehensive plan to chart a path toward achieving our goals and objectives. This 5-year DEI Action Plan reflects our commitment to systemic change and accountability as we pursue DEI and anti-racism efforts in our programs, institutional policies and practices, and products. I want to thank the DEI Council members who partnered with ODI to develop this robust plan, as well as the many National Academies staff, including leaders, Academy members, and volunteers who provided feedback.
Over the next 5 years, we will work collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders to identify priorities and implement the plan. We will routinely track progress and share outcomes, success stories, and lessons learned with our stakeholders in the spirit of transparency and shared learning to advance DEI within the National Academies and across science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and medicine (STEMM).
