Below is the uncorrected machine-read text of this chapter, intended to provide our own search engines and external engines with highly rich, chapter-representative searchable text of each book. Because it is UNCORRECTED material, please consider the following text as a useful but insufficient proxy for the authoritative book pages.

SYSTEMS EFFECTIVENESS I t was necessary to determine the ABM power-plant systems e f f e c t i v e n e s s to assure that e l e c t r i c power of a s p e c i f i e d q u a l i t y would be a v a i l a b l e during the e n t i r e l i f e of the power system, and that the r e l i a b i l i t y would be maintained a t a s p e c i f i e d value throughout any and a l l a t t a c k modes. Four general steps were necessary before the systems- e f f e c t i v e s s requirements could be engineered i n t o the power system. COLLECTION AND ANALYSIS OF OPERATING PERFORMANCE DATA C o l l e c t i o n and a n a l y s i s of operating data from a com- parable operating e l e c t r i c - p o w e r p l a n t , with r e s p e c t to: 1. operating hours of each prime mover, generator, and a u x i l i a r y , 2. the frequency of i n t e r r u p t i o n of operation, 3. the cause f o r power i n t e r r u p t i o n , 4. i d e n t i f y i n g the component of each mechanism that f a i l e d , and the reason f o r f a i l u r e . The r e s u l t s were obtained and analyzed f o r accuracy and the data with the g r e a t e s t confidence f a c t o r s were used. DEVELOPMENT OF MATHEMATICAL MODELS Mathematical models were developed to in c l u d e e s s e n t i a l operating phenomena i n c l u d i n g , i n p a r t i c u l a r : 1. p a r a l l e l operation, 2. step-load e f f e c t s , 3. maintenance and r e p a i r time. •22-
