STATE-OF-THE-ART OF HARDENED POWER PLANTS AT PROGRAM INCEPTION PRIME MOVERS The type of prime mover e v e n t u a l l y s e l e c t e d f o r the ABM Power System would have a marked e f f e c t on various components i n the e n t i r e power system, i n c l u d i n g the b u i l d i n g . I t was important to e s t a b l i s h the most l i k e l y prime mover e a r l y i n the development leading to the generation of the power system c r i t e r i a . A f t e r a comprehensive p r e l i m i n a r y review of a l l f e a s i b l e prime movers by the O f f i c e of the Chief of Engineers (OCE), i t was agreed t h a t there were four most promising types of prime movers. Contracts were i n s t i g a t e d by OCE to have the operating c h a r a c t e r i s t i c s and the economies of each of the f a m i l i e s of prime movers c a r e f u l l y analyzed. Each general type study, steam turbines and the i n t e r n a l combustion f a m i l y , was assigned to a separate engineering and re s e a r c h o r g a n i z a t i o n e s p e c i a l l y s k i l l e d i n the type of prime mover and a s s o c i a t e d equipment under study. The four prime mover systems s e l e c t e d were: 1. D i e s e l engines 2. Steam turbines 3. Gas turbines 4. Nuclear power (steam-turbine type) The s i z e of the load i n various proposed ABM Systems covered a range of approximately 15 to 75MW. A l l systems would be s u b j e c t to sudden step-loads to meet the demands of the radar. These c o n d i t i o n s , together with the extremely c l o s e voltage and frequency c o n t r o l , made the power system d i f f e r widely from conventional l a r g e e l e c t r i c u t i l i t y power systems. -1-
